The Disaster Artist was nominated in two categories for the 2018 Golden Globes: Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy and Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture – Music or Comedy.
Although the film lost Best Motion Picture to Lady Bird at last night’s awards ceremony, James Franco walked away with a Golden Globe for his portrayal of Tommy Wiseau. He received the honor over Daniel Kaluuya (Get Out), Ansel Elgort (Baby Driver), Hugh Jackman (The Greatest Showman) and Steve Carell (Battle of the Sexes). Wiseau joined Franco and his brother, Dave, up on stage during his acceptance speech.
The Disaster Artist is a behind-the-scenes look of Wiseau’s making of The Room, a 2003 film that became a “cult classic” and has been dubbed one of the “best worst movies” of all time. Franco plays Wiseau, who directed, wrote and starred in the film. The film, which was taken out of theaters after two weeks, was criticized for its poor script, direction, and acting.
The Disaster Artist was just one of the many projects John Powers Middleton has served as executive producer for.
